Assinging a group to a birthday (or other event-type) allows you to later filter the List View or Calendar View to only display events that belong to a specific group.
Choose from one of the pre-defined groups -- Family, Friends, or Work -- or create your own groups as needed by touching the presented '+' button.
You can change the name of your defined groups and/or delete unused groups from the Groups section of the app's Settings screen.
